Monday 10/24: ULTIMATE FRISBEEEEE!

This morning we slept in until 11am…lovely!! I was woken up at 3:00am by Crystal’s phone alarm going off (extremely loud) and, although it sounded like a circus had entered the room, Crytstal didn’t wake up. She didn’t even move! I managed to locate the phone and press enough buttons to get it to shut off. Just as I’d started to fall back to sleep, the 3:15am alarm went off! She didn’t wake up. This time I checked the alarms that were set and discovered that it was planning to go off at 5:15am and 5:30am as well! Yep, shut those off real quick before passing out again. Apparently they were still set from the night before when she had to skype with her family (hurrah for time zones) and then get up early to meet me at the bus station. I was just astonished that she didn’t wake up!!

Since we’d slept so late, we decided to skip our breakfast and go directly to lunch. We walked (everything is about 30-45mins away from the dorm) down to an Indian restaurant where we had the buffet for £6.50. It was delicious and there were several vegetarian options! There weren’t many people in the restaurant (we were a bit early for the lunch crowd), so the waitress spent a lot of time hovering by our table. A little awkward, but at least we always had full water glasses!

Crystal had some homework she needed to work on, so we decided to head back to her dorm for a few hours. We stopped on the way to pick up some chocolate cookies, which were still warm from the oven! Then we walked all the way back and Crystal did her homework while I read and took a nap. Still catching up on sleep…

Around 4:30pm we headed to the University of Glasgow where Crystal’s Celtic Music group meets. I just sat in the corner listening to them play. Basically it’s a group of people who enjoy playing Celtic music—so they meet up and share tunes. One person plays a song and then the group tries to repeat it until they’ve all learned the whole thing. It seemed to work pretty well—and it seemed more fun than a class. I liked getting to see (and hear) them learn a song from start to finish!

Directly from Celtic Music, we rushed off to Ultimate Frisbee!! Since we had to change clothes in the University building, I had to wear my 5-fingers while walking around Glasgow and taking the shuttle out to the sports fields. I got some strange looks…

When we arrived at the stadium, they were checking student IDs. Apparently this was the first time they’ve done it, so that was a bummer. Since I didn’t have a UofGlasgow ID, I had to pay £4. Oh well, at least I got to play! We had a pretty intense warm-up (including lots of lunges) and by the time we’d finished all the drills and were actually playing a game, I was feeling pretty sore. It was awesome to play, though! It’s been a long time…

While waiting for the shuttle to go back into town, some of the other Ultimate players convinced Crystal to play her violin (since she was still lugging it around). She performed a quick version of Amazing Grace at the bus stop, which was received with much applause.

After we’d returned to Crystal’s dorm and changed our clothes, we were starving! We walked 20 minutes to a grocery store to buy food for dinner. Since I was craving cheddar, we decided to have cheese, crackers, and plums for dinner! We attempted to buy some more pear cider, but apparently it’s illegal to buy alcohol at the grocery store after 10pm. Bummer. By the time we got back to eat, it was 11:30pm! We devoured our dinner and talked with Megan, who had stopped by to hang out for a bit. Once she left, Crystal and I watched “10 Things I Hate About You” and then stayed up until 4:30am talking and watching music videos on YouTube. It’s so nice hanging out with someone from home!
