Monday 10/31: Halloween and a real mummy!

This morning I had more toast with lemon curd for breakfast—it’s just so good!! Then I did some lesson planning for my classes in France (including making up some worksheets) while chatting with Grace, who was finishing up the pouches.

Since my wonderful mother was quick to reply to my request for my Grandma’s apple pie recipe, I was able to get started on making the crust. Once I had it in the refrigerator chilling, I made grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch! While they were grilling, I watched a little bit of the cartoon “Tom & Jerry” with Elara (who didn’t have school today). I very much enjoyed lunch—there’s just something so delicious about cheddar. Too bad they just don’t eat it in France! There are literally hundreds of other kinds of cheese, but not cheddar. :(

After lunch, I cleaned the kitchen and then Elara and I sliced apples for the pie. I put it together and popped it in the oven to bake while I finished tidying up the kitchen.

I read while waiting for my pie to finish baking and then I made more bracelets while Elara addressed invitations to her birthday party. She will turn eight on Nov 30th.

We had leftovers for dinner and then the apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. It tasted delicious, but had a bunch of liquid in the bottom. I drained out the liquid and tomorrow I’ll re-bake it a little before we have it for dessert again.

This evening we were visited by trick-or-treaters! Elara and Miranda don’t trick or treat (although Elara did get dressed up as a witch), but they do give out candy at the door!

Since Kim is a pathologist, whose job is to cut up dead people and perform autopsies, Halloween is his favorite holiday. He dyed two sheeps’ skulls neon yellow and sits them in their candy tray—which has apparently become famous in the neighborhood. I was surprised to find out that they were giving out unwrapped candy, since that would never happen in the US.

Afterwards we tasted some of the Halloween candy and had fun sticking the chocolate eyeballs onto the sheeps’ skulls. We left one sitting in the kitchen to surprise the girls in the morning…
